Job Overview:  The Assignment Editor is essential in coordinating and distributing news coverage assignments to reporters and photographers to cover breaking news and meet deadlines. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Monitor public safety scanners, fixed cameras, social media and e-mail while answering phones and keeping the newsroom informed of significant events and breaking news.
  • Coordinate daily logistics and dispatches crews and multimedia journalists to breaking news. Gather, write, edit content including local news, weather, sports, and public information.
  • Post content to multiple digital platforms.
  • Ensure social media and digital content reflects, enhances and expands on-air product. Assist producer, reporters, and web produce with story calls, setups and follow ups.
  • Work closely with producers, reporters, and meteorologists in gathering facts and presenting the best news coverage online. Assist news team in coming up with story ideas and gathering information.
  • Assign and coordinate logistics between news crews, live trucks and liveU's; coordinate live shots from trucks and other sources so stories can be broadcast live.
  • Develop and maintain awareness of local and national current news and events.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with law enforcement and fire departments, local government and community organizations to stay updated on current events.
  • Reports to work on time and works established schedule/hours including nights, weekends and holidays. Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualification:

  • Bachelors in Journalism, Communications or related field; 1-2 years previous television assignment desk experience is required. Exceptional communication skills.
  • Must have excellent writing including grammar and spelling; and copy editing skills. Able to write clear and accurate stories.
  • Advanced critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure with various personalities and meet tight deadlines. Highly organized, detail oriented, knowledge of news and news-makers.
  • Familiar with digital platforms and use of social media tools. Computer literacy required.
  • Must be able to make good decisions quickly; able to articulate choices and communicate those choices to other news department and station employees.
