Job Overview:  The Associate Producer is responsible for generating, writing, and editing news stories for broadcast, as well as the station's website and social media platforms.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Organize, select and write short-form stories in a concise and accurate manner for assigned newscasts and station website and social media sites. Ensure that any visuals shown are relevant, appropriate and impactful.
  • Break down complicated and involved stories so that they are easy to understand. Assist web department with daily maintenance of website and other digital platforms.
  • Assist news producers and all other news staff in production of daily newscasts, script writing, gathering information and organizing video clips.
  • Assist assignment manager and assignment editor with answering telephones, listening and reacting to emergency scanner calls, and sending out crews when necessary.
  • May shoot audio/video for the newscast. Fill in for the News Producer from time to time. Make decisions about the timing of a live newscast as it is being broadcast.
  • Watch the live newscast from a designated control room.
  • Communicate changes to director, technical director, audio operator, graphics person, studio operators (incl. camera operators, floor director, teleprompter operator), videotape operator, master control operator, and anchors. Decisions about the live newscast are immediate and communications must be relayed clearly and timely.
  • Maintain community contacts and awareness of local and national current events.
  • Communicate frequently throughout the day and work collaboratively with others in the newsroom. Relay story and newscast instructions and information throughout the day.
  • Respond and work well in a crisis and during breaking news. Handle last minute and unexpected changes. Communicate quickly and clearly to necessary staff and talent.
  • Attend editorial and strategic meetings. Come prepared to meetings and interact professionally with others. Contribute story ideas on a daily basis.
  • Report to work on time and work established schedule/hours.
  • Ability to work other hours or alternate schedules as needed, as assigned by the News Director. Complete other duties as requested and needed.

Qualification:

  • Previous experience in television newsroom.
  • Must have at least an entry level understanding of how to construct and write a news story. Strong organizational skills, ability to work well with people while handling stressful situations. Communications related degree is preferred.
  • Good news judgment and thorough understanding of daily news content. Ability to work effectively in a high intensity environment.
  • Professional communication skills a must.
  • Computer proficiency, including experience with photo editing, video editing, basic CMS and HTML experience is preferred. Must be able to work various hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must have excellent writing and research skills.
  • Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor. Ability to work in compliance with company policies and procedures.
