The position of Chief Engineer/Director of Engineering is responsible for managing the station engineering department in the planning, design, and installation of new systems in an effective and efficient manner and employs industry best practices to maintain quality facilities. This position also develops, maintains, and administers engineering departmental operations budget and capital budgets for studio and transmitter locations.

  • Formal training in electronics with advanced training in broadcast systems electronics is required. Formal training in IT Technologies a plus.
  • 10+ years of relevant job experience that includes demonstrated competency in the above specified job requirements. Experience must have included a position of engineering management responsibility.
  • Must have experience with purchase agreement negotiations.
  • Proven ability to function effectively under deadlines and in high-pressure situations.
  • Proven ability to think critically, strategically and tactically and to articulate information in a clear, concise manner to others.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems quickly and effectively and find solutions for staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of current FCC rules and regulations and OSHA regulations a must.
  • Available for on-call as needed, including evenings, overnights and weekends.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, a safe driving history and able to drive a company vehicle as determined by the Company. Driving record will be checked and a background check will be completed.


  • Be a champion of engineering excellence and strategic use of engineering resources and developing technology to grow station's television, digital, and mobile assets. Consult and collaborate with station and HBI leadership on long-term and short-term engineering objectives, goals and action plans and execution of them. Develop strategic plans for future station engineering needs, including purchases and growth. Stay current on new technologies and provide recommendations on new systems that can either solve workflow problems or improve performance in other ways. Communicate how objectives, goals and action plans affect the station.
  • Key responsibility is support for 24/7 news production, delivered through TV, digital, mobile, and OTT, and other emerging digital services. Sense of urgency required in response critical to broadcast, digital, and production situations.
  • Knowledgeable of all current FCC rules and regulations, ensuring the station is compliant with FCC rules and regulations at all times. Establish, consult and communicate FCC, departmental, station and HBI policies, procedures and guidance as needed.
  • Develop outstanding Engineering Department through training, evaluation and daily contact with employees. Promote continuous improvement and employee development. Recruit, train and teach new staff and engineering managers. Communicate expectations to managers and staff. Foster outstanding performance through consistent feedback and performance reviews.
  • Lead efforts and champion improvement solutions for studios and transmitters and other engineering related solutions. Lead team in planning, design, and installation of new systems in an effective and efficient manner and employ industry best practices to main quality facilities.
  • Establish effective working relationships with consultants and vendors negotiating work and purchases and scheduling work as needed.
  • Responsible for seeing that station adheres to HBI IT best practices and procedures. Work closely with the HBI IT department in support and development of broadcast IP base systems. Ensure that IT infrastructure is current and secure.
  • Ensure that all safety procedures are followed by anyone working in Engineering, including consultants and vendors.
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with departments and HBI TV stations. Assist in developing solutions to technical or workflow issues as well as with special projects as they arise.
  • Oversee operation of WHEC-TV facility.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.


Must be able to lift 75 lbs. Be able to work under stressful conditions and in all types of weather. Ability to crawl, stoop, bend, lift overhead, walk. Must have manual dexterity for keyboarding and manipulating controls and tools. Ability to work in tight spaces and under tight deadlines. Must have good vision and hearing. Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job.
