Job Overview:  The position of New Director is responsible for directing and leading the news department and seeing that the vision and mission is understood by the entire news organization.

Job Responsibilities:

Develop and maintain the strategic direction and editorial vision for News10NBC. 

Consult and collaborate with General Manager and management team on long-term and short-term objectives, goals and action plans.

Direct and lead overall efforts of the news department to ensure the vision and mission of News10NBC is understood by the entire news organization.

Responsible and accountable for overall quality and performance of the station’s news product by critiquing newscasts and digital content, discussing observations with station management and employees and rigor of teaching and accountability.

Execute commitment to breaking news and In Depth. Investigative strategy.

Lead our weather and news teams to live truly live First Alert Weather on broadcast and all digital platforms.

Develop a strong News Department staff through applicable training, evaluation and communication with team members. 

Continuously recruit to develop diverse and talented pool of candidates. Interview and select new employees for News Department team.

Hold the bar of journalistic excellence high. This is marked by accuracy and fairness and astute story selection and compelling story telling. 

Champion use of whec.com and all other digital assets as access points for our content and as creative platforms for original content Understand and incorporate extensive market research and your own tested instincts to drive the direction and decisions of the department. 

Be an engaged member of the community who understands the neighborhoods, issues, and special characteristics and nuances of the area of which you direct coverage.

Responsible for all administrative duties associated with running the news organization, including personnel and budgeting. 

Complete other duties as assigned.

 


Qualification:

Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience to meet the requirements of the position.

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Minimum of 4 years of experience as a news manager.

Demonstrable knowledge of all phases of a television news operation, including, but not limited to: news reporting and writing, newscast formats, news producing, newsroom organization, and newsgathering technology.

Dynamic strong leader with a clear vision and ability to communicate the vision to his/her team.

 Creative and adept at leading in a fast-paced, highly skilled and aggressive news environment.

Basic understanding of newsroom technical operation including computer networking, newsroom systems, satellite and digital technology.

 Knowledge of social media and multiplatform newsgathering.

Understanding of basic budgeting principle and financial management with experience in preparing and maintaining departmental budgets.

 Must have a valid driver's license and a safe driving history as determined by the Company. 

Driving record will be checked before hire and annually.

 

Compensation and Benefits:  When extending an offer, the company considers a variety of factors such as (but not limited to) the candidate's work experience, education/training & key skills as well as internal peer equity and other market and business considerations.
